How to Keep Your Lawn Green During the Hottest Months of the Year

July 28, 2025

Summer in the South brings long days, scorching heat, and little relief from the sun. While your lawn may have looked vibrant in spring, midsummer is when it really gets put to the test. The good news? With a few smart adjustments, you can keep your grass green and healthy during the hottest stretch of the year.

1. Water Deeply and Less Often

During summer’s heat, the key to a green lawn is deep, infrequent watering. This encourages roots to grow deeper, making your grass more drought-resistant.

  • Water 2–3 times per week, applying about 1 inch of water total.
  • Water early in the morning (before 9 a.m.) to prevent evaporation and fungal issues.
  • Avoid watering at night when moisture can linger on blades and invite disease.

2. Raise Your Mowing Height

Taller grass shades the soil, helping it retain moisture and protect roots from heat stress. Cutting your grass too short can cause it to dry out faster.

  • Always follow the 1/3 rule: never cut off more than one-third of the grass blade at a time.

3. Don’t Over-Fertilize

It’s tempting to feed your lawn when it looks stressed, but over-fertilizing in extreme heat can actually do more harm than good. If your lawn needs a nutrient boost, let a lawn care professional (like us!) handle it.

4. Watch for Pests and Disease

Heat-stressed lawns are more vulnerable to chinch bugs, armyworms, and fungal diseases like brown patch and dollar spot. If you notice sudden browning, thinning, or strange patches, give us a call for a professional assessment.
