Summer Lawn Care Guide: Keep Your Lawn Healthy All Season Long
Summer means sunshine, heat, and unfortunately, lawn stress. While your grass might look lush coming out of spring, rising temperatures, increased foot traffic, and occasional dry spells can quickly take a toll. That’s why it’s important to adjust your lawn care routine for the season.
We’re a locally owned business that knows southern lawns inside and out. Here’s your go-to guide for keeping your yard healthy and green all summer long.
1. Water Smart, Not More
When it comes to watering, consistency matters more than frequency. Aim to water deeply 2–3 times a week rather than a little each day. This encourages deeper root growth and helps your lawn handle heat stress better. Water early in the morning to reduce evaporation and fungal issues.
2. Mow High, Mow Right
In the heat of summer, taller grass is healthier grass. Adjust your mower to a higher setting to shade the soil and retain moisture. Never cut more than 1/3 of the grass blade at a time. Scalping can stress your lawn and open the door to weeds.
3. Stay on Top of Weeds
Even with regular treatments, summer weeds like crabgrass and spurge can still sneak in. Professional weed control can help keep them in check. Remember, healthy, thick grass is the best defense against weeds.
4. Don’t Forget About Fertilizer—But Use Caution
Warm-season grasses like Bermuda and Zoysia thrive with the right nutrients in summer. However, over-fertilizing during extreme heat can cause more harm than good. Trust a local expert like us to apply the right product at the right time.
5. Watch for Pests
Summer pests like grubs and chinch bugs can damage your lawn from below the surface. If you notice brown patches that don’t improve with watering, it may be time for a pest inspection.
6. Take It Easy on Your Lawn
Summer is for making memories in the backyard, but too much traffic can compact soil and damage turf. Rotate play areas and consider aerating if you notice thinning or hard spots.
